The Mitochondrial Assessment

Understanding your energy at its source

Your cells have not broken. They have entered a protective state — and this is a guide to what the assessment measures, why cellular energy declines, and how it may be restored, gently, naturally, and in the right order.

Why this occurs

Energy that has powered down by design

Mitochondria do not usually fail outright. More often, they are deliberately reduced in activity — a response, not a breakdown.

Something places the system under strain — most often a virus, at times another infection, a toxin, or a prolonged period of stress. In response, the cells enter a protective, energy-conserving state.

The difficulty is that the cells may remain in this state long after the original strain has passed. The result is persistent fatigue, an absence of reserve, and a system that does not readily return to full function on its own.

The aim of treatment, therefore, is not to force the system. It is to remove whatever holds it in this protective state, to calm the internal environment, and to guide the cells gently back towards full activity.

Why so much is affected

When energy is scarce, the body must choose

Every system in the body runs on the energy mitochondria provide. When energy becomes scarce, the body is forced to ration it — sustaining the functions essential to survival, and quietly withdrawing support from what it can manage without for a time. This rationing is sometimes described as energy theft: one demand met at the expense of another.

It is for this reason that a difficulty which begins within the cell rarely stays there. As energy is drawn away, other systems begin to falter in turn, and the picture broadens well beyond fatigue alone.

The immune system

Commonly affected

The immune system

Defence is costly in energy. It may become underactive, allowing infections to linger or reactivate, or overactive, tending towards inflammation, allergy, and sensitivity.

The hormonal system

Commonly affected

The hormonal system

The glands that govern energy, mood, and metabolism depend upon cellular energy to do their work. Their output may fall, and the body's finely balanced signalling may drift.

The adrenal and stress response

Commonly affected

The adrenal and stress response

Under sustained strain, the systems that manage stress and steady the body may become dysregulated, leaving a person feeling depleted, and less able to recover from demand.

Commonly affected

The autonomic nervous system

The automatic control of heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, and temperature may become unsettled — giving rise to light-headedness, palpitations, and poor tolerance of standing or exertion.

Recognising this wider pattern matters, because it explains why so many seemingly unrelated symptoms so often appear together. Among the conditions and presentations in which reduced cellular energy is frequently recognised are:

Chronic fatigue and post-viral syndromes (including ME/CFS and long COVID); fibromyalgia and persistent widespread pain; disorders of the autonomic system, such as postural orthostatic tachycardia; adrenal and thyroid imbalance; recurrent or reactivated infection; unexplained brain fog and cognitive difficulty; sensitivity to medications, foods, or the environment; and a general decline in resilience, recovery, and vitality that ordinary investigation does not explain.

Reduced cellular energy is seldom the whole of any diagnosis, but it is very often a thread running quietly through it. Restoring energy, therefore, tends to lift far more than fatigue alone.

What is measured

A complete assessment of cellular energy

Each measurement examines a different aspect of how the body produces and protects its energy. Below is what each one means, and how each may be supported.

01

Energy output

If reducedThere is a genuine shortfall in energy, and ordinary daily tasks demand more than they should.
The causeFewer or weaker mitochondria, inefficient use of fuel, or the protective state itself.
The responseGentle cofactor support, alongside careful management of the energy that is available.
02

Reserve capacity

If reducedThis is the defining finding. When the body requires more energy, it cannot provide it, and a period of collapse follows exertion.
The causeThe protective state prevents the cells from increasing their output on demand.
The responseCareful pacing is the treatment. Remaining within one's limits prevents the collapse and allows everything else to work.
03

Number of mitochondria

If reducedThere are simply fewer energy-producing structures within each cell than there should be.
The causeThe signal that instructs the body to build new mitochondria has been reduced.
The responseSupporting renewal gradually over time, never by force, which is counter-productive.
04

The signal to renew(PGC-1α)

If reducedThe body is not being instructed to rebuild its energy-producing structures.
The causeThis signal is deliberately lowered while the cells remain in their protective state.
The responseRemoving the underlying trigger, so that the signal may return of its own accord.
05

The natural defence system(Nrf-2)

If reducedThe body's protection against internal wear is weakened, and damage begins to accumulate.
The causeThis defence is lowered alongside the rest of the system, and is further depleted by ongoing strain.
The responseGentle antioxidant support, calming the system before any attempt is made to stimulate it.
06

Oxidative strain

If raisedA proportion of oxygen is being consumed by stress and inflammation rather than by the production of energy.
The causeOngoing immune activity, or a trigger that has not yet resolved.
The responseCalming the source and providing antioxidant support.
07

Choice of fuel

If alteredThe cells rely on a less efficient method of producing energy, and make little use of fat as a fuel.
The causeThe mitochondria are not processing fuel correctly while in their protective state.
The responseCofactors that assist the handling of fuel, introduced gradually.
08

The underlying cause

Key pointThe screen reveals what is happening, but not why. Identifying the cause is the most valuable step of all.
OftenAn underlying driver, most commonly a virus, holds the cells in their protective state.
The responseTargeted testing for viral and, where indicated, other triggers, followed by gentle treatment.

The wider foundations

Energy does not stand alone

Cellular energy is never restored in isolation. It rests upon foundations, and if one is disturbed, the mitochondria are among the first to feel it. Levitas therefore looks to the whole terrain in which the cells live, favouring natural means wherever they will serve.

Foundation · One

Natural optimisation

Wherever possible, the body is supported through natural means — nutrition, movement within limits, sunlight, breath, and the sensible use of botanicals and nutrients — so that recovery is gentle and sustainable rather than forced.

Foundation · Two

Detoxification

The body must be able to clear what burdens it. Before anything is cleared or treated, the natural routes of elimination are opened and supported, so that nothing accumulates and no unnecessary strain is placed upon a system already low in energy.

Foundation · Three

Gut and liver

The gut and liver are the body's centres of processing and defence. A settled gut and a well-functioning liver reduce the internal load upon the cells, and are attended to early, as they influence almost everything that follows.

Foundation · Four

Circadian rhythm and sleep

The mitochondria repair and renew most deeply during rest. Restoring a natural daily rhythm and protecting the quality of sleep is one of the most powerful and natural means of allowing energy to return.

Foundation · Five

Hormonal balance

The body's hormones govern its energy, its resilience, and its capacity to recover. These are assessed and, where required, gently and carefully balanced, so that the wider system is able to support the cells rather than work against them.

Foundation · Six

The basics, confirmed first

Before any plan begins, the fundamentals are checked and settled. This ensures that every step that follows is safe, is built upon firm ground, and is suited precisely to the individual before us.

Assess yourself

A short self-assessment

The questionnaire below offers a simple indication of whether cellular energy may be worth investigating. It is a guide for reflection and conversation, not a diagnosis. Select each statement that applies to you.

Over the past three months, how often have the following been true?

This self-assessment is intended to support reflection and discussion with a clinician. It does not diagnose any condition.

How energy is restored

The Levitas approach — to support, rather than force

The guiding principle is to work with the body's protective state, not against it. Treatment proceeds in a deliberate order, each stage preparing the way for the next.

1
First, and always

Confirm the basics

The fundamentals are checked and settled before anything begins — hormones, the essential blood markers, sleep, gut and liver — so that the plan which follows is safe, well-founded, and suited to the individual.

2
The foundation

Pace and protect

Remaining within one's energy limits to prevent collapse, simplifying the existing regime, and beginning a single gentle antioxidant. Nothing else succeeds without this foundation in place.

3
Identify the cause

Establish the trigger

Testing for the underlying driver that holds the cells in their protective state, most commonly a virus, and other infections where indicated. The cause is addressed, not merely the symptoms.

4
Prepare the ground

Detoxification, gut and liver

The natural routes of elimination are opened and supported, and the gut and liver are settled, so that the body may clear what burdens it without placing further strain upon a system already low in energy.

5
A gentle first measure

Immune support

Where a viral cause is confirmed, low-dose immune support helps the body regain control of the virus. Because it calms rather than forces, it avoids the setback that stronger measures may cause.

6
Rebuild gradually

Cellular support, by natural means

Once the system is stable, a small and carefully chosen combination of nutrients and gentle infusions is introduced, one at a time, with the response to each observed before the next is added.

7
Restore rhythm and balance

Sleep, circadian rhythm and hormones

The natural daily rhythm is restored, sleep is protected, and hormonal balance is confirmed and gently supported — the deeper foundations upon which lasting energy depends.

The screen is then repeated after approximately twelve weeks, providing clear and measurable evidence of recovery rather than a reliance on how one feels alone.

In summary

Everyone is a signature, defined by their own response to all they meet in life — in mind, in body, and in soul. No two people arrive at the same place by the same path, and so no two plans are ever the same. Because your energy is reduced rather than lost, it can be restored — gently, naturally, and in the order that is right for you.
